As summer is upon us, our local service organizations are busy volunteering and planning for the coming club year. While most clubs take a little break as people vacation and kids are out of school, there are many organizations that continue to be very active and they seem to be busier than ever.
There is no break for Coral Gables Rotarians who continue bringing great speakers to the club’s weekly meetings at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. The June 12 meeting featured Dr. Rachel Silverstein, CEO of Miami Waterkeeper, who explained the concern over the water issue with Turkey Point and the history of trying to resolve the hot water issue going into Biscayne Bay and killing fish and plant life.
The solution to the problem of recycling the water that cools the turbine steam supply came from a unique, closed system of 36 interconnected canals that act like a giant radiator cooling the water on a two-day, 168-mile journey circulating back to the condenser for reuse. Because of the porous rock there is concern of potential leakage from that over time.
Programs such as these are among the topical, educational and interesting topics brought to the club’s members every week. Kudos to RCCG past president Frank Sexton for his efforts this past club year in securing great speakers. In addition to great meetings, RCCG members are busy with several ongoing programs from monthly bingo games for our veterans at the VA Hospital to coastal cleanups, school supply drives and more. Coming soon, president Jim Skinner will turn the gavel over to president-elect Greg Petrino.
In other club news, members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club are off on an seven-night fundraising cruise with friends and family this week. The cruise makes a stop in Roatan, Honduras, where members will perform a day of service delivering school supplies to an elementary school in need on July 1.
Roatan is the hometown of club member Rita Tennyson, who many know as the owner of R Catering and Birdie Bistro, where she hosted a Sunday brunch for volunteers to pack backpacks and school supplies. Among the volunteers were Vivian Garcia, Dr. Iris Torres, Ruth Martinez, Rita Tennyson, Barbara Lapsley, and Martha Black.

Prior to the club’s cruise on MSC World America, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s GWC Arts & Culture chair Alex Guillen arranged the first in a series of arts programs that also will serve as mini fundraisers. The first program, called “Women in Music,” featured the music of three female composers. As guests enjoyed drinks with the option of purchasing a bite from Charcuterie Bree, there was time to socialize before a beautiful two-part program featuring Duo Vizcaya’s string quartet.
After intermission, during which everyone sang happy birthday to the club’s past president Linda Hartwell, Duo Vizcaya’s founder Madison Ryan played violin with marimba accompaniment to a standing ovation.
Kudos to Alex Guillen, a great physical therapist in real life, a woman of many talents whose first event in a series speaks to her talents as well as her organizational and leadership skills. In fact, the club held its June 18 Gringo Bingo where Guillen once again stepped up to fill in as deejay with a packed house at Birdie Bistro complementing Vivo’s Steven Bradley as emcee.
With a portion of the proceeds directed to the Out Of Foster Foundation, OOFF’s founder Rudy Bustamente was on hand with supporters with ongoing event sponsors Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, Jerry Kavulich, Carlos and Mayra Rossi, Tom and Kim Davison and Dr. Jose Chaviano.
Aside from Gringo Bingo on June 18, earlier that day the Greater Miami Festivals and Events Association (GMFEA) held its annual conference at the beautiful Milander Center for Arts and Entertainment in Hialeah.
